Thoughts on Process

We like the name Acronym because it suggests directness, brevity, and a spirit of shared authorship. We think a lot about the way we work and try to imbue our process with those values.

Trust the Hand

We prefer to rely on analog media whenever possible. Physical models and hand sketches reveal what can’t be imagined or easily quantified.

Embrace Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Our design partnership is built on a foundation of trust in each other’s expertise, and we believe that we often don’t know what we don’t know. This extends to the way we work with others; we are interested in forging relationships of collaboration, rather than consultation.

Be Low-Tech, Site-Specific

Whenever possible, we seek to use passive technologies and local building traditions, rather than mechanical systems and manufactured products. We believe reliance on regionally-specific and environmental construction techniques strengthens a connection to place and suffuses a project with timelessness.

Explore Material Potential

We believe in an experimental approach to building that considers the full potential of materials. We seek to exploit novel methods of processing, refinement, and recombination.

Expose Construction

Building is beautiful, and we seek to reveal — rather than conceal — the literal nuts and bolts of construction. We view exposed detailing as both a signal of verisimilitude and a practical consideration for repairs and alterations.
